Lake Novillo is in Sonora, Mexico. Lake Novillo is only two hours from Hermosillo and is located in Sonora's most beautiful and rugged mountains, near a sleepy little town by the name of San Pedro De La Cueva, a 70 mile long impoundment with endless points and coves amidst mountainous terrain and three small towns with a combined population of only 1,800 people. Fed by the Yaqui and Moctezuma rivers, El Novillo Lake is home to a mean strain of Northern Largemouth bass. If an affordable Mexican bass adventure is the plan, this lake may be just the place.

The local governments stocked 375,000 Florida strain fingerlings three years ago in the hopes of increasing the size of the average catch here which is roughly only two pounds. The lake record, though, is thirteen and a half pounds and fish in the range of four to six pounds are caught regularly. Lake Novillo is absolutely loaded with bass in the three to seven pound range. There is also a good possibility of hooking into a monster double digit largemouth! Natural forage for the bass in this lake are shad, bluegill, crappie, and of course tilapia.

Catch of the Day

My name is Bill Schmitt, my partner Bob Hildebrand and I are the owners of BMB Fishing Tours. BMB is a largemouth bass sport fishing business at Lake El Novillo. El Novillo is a short fifteen minute drive from our lodge located in San Pedro De La Cueva a small town two hours northeast of Hermosillo, Mexico. We recently returned from a two week trip in March. The fishing was fantastic as Jeff Dolak of San Francisco and Rod Dolak of Marietta, Ohio will tell you. We enjoyed four great days of fishing, catching somewhere in the neighborhood of 300 largemouth bass. Days one and two were rainy and overcast, however that did not stop the top water bite. Bob caught numerous fish on a white popper. Days three and four got even better as the weather cleared. We caught lots of bass on 5” sinkos, 7” brush hogs and various other plastics. Green pumpkin seems to be the color of choice for these feisty fish. Drop shot and crank bates work good as well. The next week we were joined by Jonah Li of Hi’s Tackle Box in South San Francisco, Justin Wolff of Angler West Television, Cal and Jip of TackleTour.com and Dean Yoshizumi of Black Water International, distributors of Toray fishing line. To see how great that week was visit tackletour.com and check the article titled Lake El Novillo, Mexico. If you are interested in a DVD of the television show filmed by Justin Wolff. Contact Bill Schmitt at 520 834-6885. For information on booking a trip go to www.bmbfishingtours.com and pick the dates from the calendar, then contact Bill at 520 834-6885 or Bob at 530 263-6710. I will let everyone know how it went when I get back from my trip at the end of April. See you the then. Bill Schmitt BMB Fishing Tours
