Mexico's most popular bass fishing lake is Lake El Salto. According to Bassmaster Magazine, “if you are in Mexico bass fishing on Lake El Salto, you are on the absolute best trophy bass lake in the world.” Lake El Salto has produced more double-digit weight bass than any bass lake in the world.
Lake El Salto is a scenic lake located in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains. It´s just 550 feet above sea level and just 90 minutes, north of Mazatlan, Mexico, on all paved roads or 800 miles from Nogales, Arizona. It was built on the Rio Elota River and covers approximately 24,000 surface acres. Lake El Salto has a depth of 225 feet at the dam. There are many private fishing outfitters who are happy to accommodate your every need.
Lake El Salto was stocked around 15 years ago with largemouth Florida bass, but because of the warm temperature of the water, it turned in to a very big and aggressive bass. The fishing season is from September 15 through July 31 but the best time to catch the most double-digit weight bass in one fishing trip on El Salto is May and June. El Salto has a healthy population of trophy size bass. When the lake was first opened, fishermen found a trophy bonanza, with 85 percent of everyone who fished El Salto hooking the biggest fish of their lifetime. The aggressive bass of El Salto will strike a variety of lures all year, but topwaters and crankbaits are the best.
