Lake Jennings is conveniently located off Interstate 8 in East San Diego County, California. This 85-acre lake between El Cajon and Lakeside, CA, has a huge reputation for super sized catfish. Lake Jennings is also a good place to catch the larger-sized blue catfish and every year there are reports of catfish being caught in the 12 to 15 pound range. Trout is stocked here too. Shore fishing is very good and there is a campground nearby.
Lake Jennings County Park offers the city-bound fisherman the opportunity to fly fish for stocked trout, bass, and bluegill in a country setting, maybe even on his lunch break. Though often thought of as a place to soak PowerBait, for fly anglers, especially those short on time, Lake Jennings is possibly San Diego’s best-kept bass fishing secret.
Lake Jennings is a drinking water reservoir, and so the water level varies throughout the year and can lead to major changes in the prime fishing spots. Check with local sources before heading out to the lake to see if the water level has led to a change in the prime schooling and spawning spots.
Catch of the Day
Lake Jennings Campground now has WiFi at every campsite. October 11, 2009 For Immediate Catch and Release Hello from Your Lake Jennings: There continues to be a decent bass bite along the edges in the morning. The key is to drag something ugly off the bank into the water very slowwwwwly. OR skip a jig or tube under the overhanging trees, again very slow retrieve . The deepest that fish have been caught at during the day is 15’ to 20’ on the points. Some cats are being caught from shore where you can reach the channel from Hermit Cove and Big Rock. Your best bet is to fish from a boat in 80 to 100 ft. of water. Best Cat Spots: The dam buoyline and Hermit Cove buoyline. Best Cat Bait: Chicken livers, mackeral and night crawlers. Use scent liberally. Best Bass Spots: Target the bank, fish downhill with creature type baits. Best Bass Lures /bait: . Ika’s, big worms, and Senkos Water Temp. 74 degrees on surface. Notables: No fish reported over 3 lbs. or limits under1 hour. Prognosis: Our first trout plant should be on schedule for the week of October 19th. Don’t let the cool water fool you into thinking that you can’t catch cats. There is no better time than right now to fill a limit. The lake will start dropping even faster which will further displace small fish and crawdads. So concentrate on the bank. We are bringing back our twilight boat rentals. Motorboats are $ 20.00 for the last 3 hours that we are open. So you can get a boat at 4 PM for $ 20.00. We are only 1 week away from the start of our trout season. Mt Lassen has developed a new strain of rainbow trout that they are calling the “Sierra Bow.” http://www.mtlassentrout.com/sierrabow.html The Lake Jennings Free Fishing University will be teaching cat fishing for 1 last week…… For more info: Hugh Marx (619) 390-1300 Check out our website: www.lakejennings.org New Hours: Fri.: 6:30 AM until 6:45 PM Sat.: 6:30 AM until 6:45 PM Sun.: 6:30 AM until 6:45 PM Lake Jennings Campground now has WiFi at every campsite.
