Lake Oroville is a large man-made reservoir created by Oroville Dam in central Northern California in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, located east (and upriver) of the city of Oroville, CA in Butte County. It was built by the California Department of Water Resources as part of the California State Water Project. The lake supplies water that is transported to the San Francisco Bay Area and southern portions of the state for irrigation and other uses.

The South Fore bay of the lake is used by speed boats, personal water craft and hydroplanes. The North Fore bay is reserved for non-motorized use only, such as sailing and windsurfing. The lake is a popular bass fishing destination, hosting several fishing tournaments each year. The Lake Oroville Complex is home to a wide variety of fish and the lake is regularly stocked by the California Department of Fish and Game with Coho salmon from the nearby Feather River Fish Hatchery.

The Hatchery, when in season, offers a close-up view of salmon, and signs provide self-guided tours for visitors. The lake's record-setting two-story fishery provides anglers with a variety of catches such as crappie, catfish, rainbow and German brown trout, bluegill, and green sunfish. Noted for its bass (spotted, large- and small-mouth, etc.) fishing, Lake Oroville is a popular spot for bass tournaments.
