Lake Havasu is a large reservoir behind Parker Dam on the Colorado River between the border of California and Arizona. The lake's capacity is 648,000 acre feet. The concrete arch dam was built by the United States Bureau of Reclamation between 1934 and 1938. The primary purpose of the lake is to store water for pumping into aqueducts.
Lake Havasu is well known for its recreational fishing and boating which bring in 3.5 million visitors a year. Fishing tournaments are often held on the lake. Bass and striper are the main catch. In addition, white sturgeon were stocked into Lake Havasu in 1967 from the San Pablo Bay, in California. This stocking effort was unsuccessful though and numbers diminished quickly. Some dead sturgeon have been found downstream, believed to have died passing over the dam. Living fish have not been recorded in recent years, but may still exist along the southern end of the lake.
Sunfish, large and smallmouth bass, striped bass, crappie, catfish, (both flat head and channel). carp, turtles and razorback sucker are form Lake Havasu’s fish population.
Hotels and other facilities are around the area for the less adventurous type.
